To enable course members to:

To enable course members to:
Understand basic principles of working safely in proximity to overhead and underground utilities
Understand their responsibilities whilst on site.

CS-30 / CS-31 Chainsaws - Maintenance, Cross-cutting
To enable course members to:
State and identify the necessary protective clothing required and locate the various standard marks.
Identify safety features on a chain saw.
Identify faults and defects on a chain saw prior to use.
Maintain the guide bar and sharpen chains to manufacturer’s specifications.
Carry out correctly all routine maintenance in the trainee guide and/or manufacturer’s instruction book.
Start the chain saw from both cold and hot in a safe manner and carry out pre-use safety checks.
Fell trees of various sizes between 8" and 15" that may be leaning at various angles and directions.
Carry out snedding or de-limbing operations to safely remove all branches from the tree.
Cross cut the tree into pre-determined lengths and stack safely for future handling.
Deal with trees that have become lodged in adjacent trees during the felling operation.

CS-32 Fell Medium Sized Trees 380mm (15”) and 760mm (30”)
To enable course members to:
State the regulations and safety requirements relating to chainsaw use
Assess trees to be felled for hazards and risks
Use appropriate techniques and aids to take down trees
De-limb trees using appropriate safe techniques
Cross-cut safely to correct lengths
Handle and stack timber
Fell large trees between 1 and 2 times the guide bar length, ie 380mm to 760mm using correct cuts, stance, and felling aids

To enable course members to
State and identify the necessary protective clothing require, and locate the various standards marks

Identify faults and defects on a chain saw prior to use and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineer’s attention.
Maintain guide bar and sharpen chains to manufacturer’s specifications.
Carry our correctly all routine maintenance in the trainee guide and/or manufacturer’s instruction book.
Start the chain saw from both cold and hot in a safe manner.
Check the performance of the saw by cross cutting and taking any necessary remedial action.
NB: The correct protective clothing must be worn by those undertaking the last two objectives.

NB: This course covers individual windblown trees and does not include techniques for dealing with multiple windblow in dense coniferous plantations which present very significant hazards and require specialist skills and knowledge.
